SIXTH
INTERNATIONAL PRECISION FLYING AND NAVIGATION EXERCISE OF LACHUTE
- SEPTEMBER 29, 2007
On a beautiful fall day and in a general good spirit, the 6th "Lachute
International Air Rally" organized by EAA Chapter 266 and COPA
Flight 118 was held Saturday, September 29.
The 100 miles course took the participants from Lachute to Lachute.
Pictures identifying the turning points were handed over as well
as magnetic headings to follow. The location of another series of
pictures had to be marked on the map. Participants were timed against
the ground speed that they had selected. Nothing very complicated
but it took a bit of organization in the cockpit and some observation
skill. The quality of the landings was rated by (impartial) judges.
Twelve teams entered the event. The winners, ex aequo, were David
Rancourt from Sherbrooke, flying a Hummelbird and Karl Hartlen/Georges
Bourguignon of St Lazare in a Maule M4. However it is worth noting
that David had no navigator/observer to help him, and must have
had a challenge unfolding the map and pictures in his tiny cockpit.
Bravo!
Another interesting point is that the best marks for landing went
to two tail draggers: the Champion flown by J.Bannon and JP Chartrand
and
the Hummelbird!
Given the apparent satisfaction of the participants we just might
consider organizing a 7th Rally next Year. Watch for it!
Many thanks to the new administration at Lachute Airport and to
Dicom our traditional sponsor.
