Chapter History
EAA Chapter 266 has a long and rich legacy of aviation enthusiasts dating back to the early 60's. We are building this "History Page" to permanently capture the many stories of those who founded the Chapter and the many who kept is going over the years.
We encourage everyone to contribute any and all photos and stories you might have related to any aspect of aviation connected with Chapter 266. This could include projects (yours or others), events that took place in the distant past, the leadership of the Chapter, etc.
Our first contributor was Henry Ilnicki.
Thanks Henry!
Henry Ilnicki in his BD-5 Project
In 1991 Henry Ilnicki was building a BD-5 when he decided to start
a Durand MK-V, so the BD-5 was mothballed and the space made available
for his new project. Following a visit to Eric Hickey's project,
Henry eventually purchased Bob Taylor's Durand Mk-V plans, raw
materials and hardware.

Eric Hickey and his Durand Mk-V
This is first three pictures taken on 15 July 1987, one day after the
great flood in Montreal from the previous day. These photos show Eric
Hickey and his Durand Mk-V. Eric was airing out his wings because his
basement had gotten damp from all the rain that poured down the day before.
Eric had scheduled an open house on this date and I think I was the only
other member from EAA266 to attend. Photos courtesy of Henry Ilnicki.
This aircraft is the only Durand Mk-V in the world that is mounted on
floats, which Eric had built prior to starting the airframe.
Note the welded aluminum auxiliary fuel tank / seat back that Eric incorporated
into his vehicle.

Fred Ades' Osprey
Fred Ades was building an Osprey in the 1990's. If you can fill in the
blanks, please email the webmaster
with the missing information, or anything else you can add to the story!

Ziggy Berzins
Many of you will remember Ziggy Berzins, builder of a Sonerai2 and of a Cygnet. Ziggy was the absolute expert in VW engines. Both airplanes were VW powered. The Cygnet received the Reserve Grand Champion prize at Oshkosh in.1989. The Sonerai was test flown in the fall of 1977. By June 78 Ziggy had flown the restricted hours, 75 in those days.
In July he flew to Orillia to an EAA Canada convention and late July he was off to Oskosh. Nine hours to get there and six hours and forty fives minutes back, not a mechanical glitch. For many years Ziggy's Cygnet could be seen in Oshkosh by the control tower, as a Reserve Grand Champion the airplane had a guaranteed parking spot there.
Ziggy eventually sold the Cygnet and rebuilt a Piper Colt that he put in the Owner-Maintenance category. As a result of this move he can no longer fly to Oshkosh , but he is there every year.He now llives in Sarnia
